Winning Child Custody II
by Dr. Reena Sommer
It is a sad state of affairs when children get caught in their parents' divorce crossfire. Unfortunately, that is the reality for an increasing number of children whose parents have chosen to engage in custody disputes. For these divorcing parents, "winning child custody" seems to be their battle cry. In an age where joint custody is the accepted norm, the obvious question is - why should such custody battles even exist?
Why Are There Custody Battles?
There are some circumstances when one or the other parent isn't capable of providing a physically or emotionally safe and nurturing environment. In these cases, it makes sense that joint custody is not appropriate. However, in most divorce situations, this simply is not the case.
What Fuels Child Custody Battles?
The reality is that most custody battles are fueled by money, control and/or a desire for revenge. In these situations, the children are the unfortunate losers.
The Cost of Winning Child Custody
The price tag of winning child custody is very high both financially and emotionally. And for children whose parents relentlessly battle it out without cause, there carry scars that often take years to heal.
Unfortunately, parents who are caught in custody disputes fail to realize that the years their children spend with them are limited. They also fail to realize that they run the risk of ruining the foundation of what should be a life long relationship because of the acrimony associated with an unwarranted custody battle. If parents were to consider the long term consequences of their actions, perhaps they may rethink their need to seek revenge, control or money that will probably be off set by their attorney's fees.
